Master of Arts in Communication
Expected Graduation: May 2019
I think it is important to delve into who I am in order to help visitors to navigate through this portfolio. I have worked several jobs while undertaking assignments in this program. I continue to use my studies to guide me in these environments from a communication standpoint.
I am an author, poet, and activist. My day jobs consist of working as a creative assistant and content researcher for an advertising agency. I am also an editor and social media manager for an arts organization. I am working to create a project-based nonprofit organization to support communities of color across the United States.
As a community organizer, I have planned voter registration drives in Georgia, specifically in Fulton, Clayton and DeKalb county. I have also trained interns during summer organizing institute sessions. I contributed to and edited newsletters among other tasks to engage local communities. I canvassed for political candidates and social justice causes.
I attended the University of Georgia where I studied at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Institute for African American Studies. I wanted to pursue communication in my graduate career. The Queens University of Charlotte offered just what I needed to begin.
This blog serves as a culmination of my personal, professional and academic experiences from the perspective of a graduate student with origins in urban communities. My identities have heavily influenced my responses to assignments on a weekly basis. It is necessary to place this into perspective before viewing the content in this portfolio.
Thank you for joining me!
